There are many ways to remove hair; why is using an alexandrite laser the best one?
There are many procedures for long-term hair removal on the market, and the IPL procedure can be an example. However, the most efficient way to remove hair is to use the alexandrite laser and here we will explain why.

Only 6-10 procedures are required to remove hair for a long period of time. With the use of other lasers, procedures need to be carried out significantly more often. Is this laser suitable only for dark hair, can it be used with light hair?
The melanin contained in hair absorbs the 755 nm light wave better (see table) than the light of other lasers, i.e. the diode laser or Nd: Yag laser; therefore this laser is also the most effective laser for light hair removal. Truth or myth?
Since we have a lot of experience in the field of laser depilation, we will debunk a couple of myths which we often hear repeated. In this way, we would like to help people who are still doubtful about the laser procedures and and are not sure what decision to make.
1. IPL (photoepilation) is more effective than a laser procedure.
This is a myth. Lasers are more effective than photoepilation, since they focus an aimed beam, which affects melanin and is several times stronger than the light emitted by a photoepilation device.
2. The IPL procedure is a newer method than laser procedures.
True. The producers tried to find a cheaper device, but the use of IPL does not allow to achieve laser procedure efficiency.
3. Photoepilation can be executed faster than a laser procedure.
Myth. Procedures using the new generation of lasers are much faster.
4. Lasers are multifunctional.
Myth. All lasers emit light of one specific wavelength only: one of them affects melanin, other oxyhemoglobin and they all execute only ONE function. They are categorized according to that specific function into pigment spot removal laser, blood vessel removal laser, etc. Only IPL devices are multifunctional, since they emit light at different wavelengths. The alexandrite laser is specifically created for depilation purposes, since it affects the melanin pigment in the best way possible, and, being the most powerful laser, it even removes pigment spots. Its biggest advantage is selective efficiency in affecting the melanin contained in hair. As a result, the depilation procedures with this laser are especially effective.
5. Laser procedures are painful.
Both true and a myth. During the execution of the laser procedures, you might feel a little tingling. Candela alexandrite laser is the only one with an integrated DCD-cooling system, which cools down the skin prior and after the impulse.
Therefore, the unpleasant sensations are reduced to a minimum and are less intense compared to those felt during procedures using other lasers.
6. Laser does not remove light hair.
Both true and a myth. It depends on the melanin pigment part of the hair. Alexandrite lasers are the most powerful depilation lasers; they are many times more powerful than the usual lasers, and so they are the best suited for removing light hair.
Does laser depilation hurt?
When long-term hair removal with an alexandrite laser is performed, a slight sense of tingling and heat is felt during each laser impulse. However, this hair removal laser is the only one with a specially created and integrated DCD cooling system. This makes the procedure pleasant for you, since during the procedure, your skin is refreshed with a wave of cold after each laser impulse. This way, the higher energy impulses can be performed without causing pain and you get to enjoy the best result possible. What exactly happens to the hair when it is removed by a laser?
Hair has the highest melanin content at the early growth phase, and so further procedures are needed to remove as much hair as possible with the laser at this stage. The hair falls out after the first procedure; after that the amount of hair decreases, the hairs that grow back are thinner, and finally the hair disappears. You will notice a reduced amount of regrown hair even after the first procedure.
The procedures are executed each 4-12 weeks (depending on the area of the body). Laser procedures are the most efficient method for long-term hair removal. Only a high efficiency and specific wavelength laser beam can remove hair for a long period of time. Lasers vary greatly, just as cars do. Their purposes, wavelengths, parameters and levels of efficiency are not the same, and therefore their efficiency is also different!

Why is it necessary to remove hair with a laser if it can be shaven, plucked or removed with wax?
Plucking and shaving hair, or depilation using sugar or wax and depilation creams will remove hair only for a short time. Apart from that, these procedures cause skin problems – such as ingrown hairs, and rashes that leave dark spots for a long time. Some of the rashes cause bacterial infections and they might scar the skin tissue.
During long-term laser hair removal, only the hair follicle is removed and the surrounding tissues are not damaged during the procedure. After the first “GentleLase Pro” alexandrite laser procedure, the hair does not grow back, rashes and spots disappear and the general appearance of the skin becomes better. The hair becomes healthy and smooth again.
Why is long-term hair removal with an alexandrite laser more efficient than the use of an IPL device?
The laser is a piece of medical equipment which emits light of a certain wavelength and directly affects its target – destroying the hair follicles and surrounding cells which constitute a hair. This is how long-term depilation is performed. Lasers are much more powerful than photoepilation devices and IPL (intensive pulse light) equipment, and so using lasers enables more effective results to be achieved.
Since lasers emit light beams at a single, specific wavelength, they are intended to resolve specific “skin problems”, i.e. to perform depilation. Devices which emit intensive pulse lights (IPL) radiate a layer of rays and thus do not affect their target directly – the melanin in the hair does not absorb light with equal efficiency. Due to the low efficiency of photoepilation devices, the hair follicles are not destroyed. In addition to this, the wider light spectrum radiated by IPL devices presents a greater risk of side-effects.
The efficiency of depilation procedures depends on the efficiency of the equipment. Usually photoepilation equipment emitting impulse lights have an efficiency of 10-50 J/cm2 (alexandrite laser efficiency is 150 J/cm2). IPL devices of this strength act only on the surface and cannot destroy hair follicles, thus even after 7-10 procedures the hair will still grows back in a very short time. It should be noted that cosmetologists are allowed to work with only very low-power IPL equipment.
Because of the wide light spectrum of the IPL, devices are primarily intended to be used for the removal of problems other than depilation: facial redness, hair removal, etc., but because of the low efficiency of photoepilation devices, these procedures have very little effect.
What to consider before laser depilation?
• Avoid active sunrays for at least three weeks prior to the laser procedure and use sunblock creams/lotions which have a sun protection factor (SPF) 30 or higher. Refrain from applying self-tanning creams.
• Refrain from plucking hair or applying wax removal procedures for one month prior to the laser procedure. All other depilation methods where the root of the hair is left untouched (such as shaving or cutting) are allowed. Clean the skin prior to the procedure, shaving the hair on the same day or in the evening before. Please note: you do not need to shave areas of the face.
• Refrain from applying any irritating agents, such as glycolic acids, retinoids, etc., for one week prior to the procedure.
• If you use specific medicines which make you allergic to light, please inform the doctor immediately.
• The depilation process is most efficient with light skin and dark hair.
• In cases of the perioral herpes virus, anti-virus therapy might be prescribed if laser depilation is performed on a part of the face.
• The procedure is not permitted for pregnant women. Brest-feeding women are allowed to undergo the procedure.
